5 Quick Eating Tips for Weight Loss

Part of an overall health and wellness program is managing body weight and maintaining a healthy percentage of total lean body mass. To optimize your healthy body weight composition, we have some simple, yet effective eating tips that will enhance your wellness strategies.

tips for weight loss1) A calorie is a calorie! Even though some foods are 'empty' calories offering little nutritional value, all foods contain calories, so manage your intake regardless of the quality of the food you eat:
• Use smaller dishes to eat from so you avoid overloading your meals with excess calories
• Drink water or herbal tea before a meal to help decrease the amount of time it takes to feel full
• Load up on fiber rich foods like vegetables and whole grains as fiber also increases the feeling of fullness more readily

2) Eat smaller and more frequent meals Spreading out your food intake over several meals instead of the traditional three will allow you to manage digestive hormone cycles and maintain energy levels more effectively:
• Eat your larger, more dense meals at breakfast and lunch, then tapper your meals at the end of the day with fewer carbohydrates (if you are going to eat a dessert, eat it midday so you have all day to burn it off!)
• Snacks are critical as part of this multi-meal strategy. Snacks should be nutrient dense and clean.

3) Never leave the house without food-PERIOD! Going hungry while out and about will likely force you to eat a less-than-nutritious quick fix. Plan ahead and always keep and nutrient dense snack with you.

4) Avoid the 'calorie' reduced processed foods Products promoted as low in calories or low in fat often offer little value in supporting your weight management efforts:
• Products that are 'low fat' are often filled with chemicals to enhance the flavor missing from the fat and these fats are often replaced with processed sugars-remember, fat is not always a bad thing
• Products that are 'low in calories' are often super small in serving sizes that are unrealistic (that's how the calories are reduced) or the calorie producing elements like fat and sugars are replaced with chemicals that are equally, or more, unhealthy

5) Increase your fiber intake with fresh fruits and vegetables as well as whole grains Fiber actually reduces the amount of fat and other food elements being absorbed by surrounding the food particles. The result is a portion of food is not digested and eliminated. Always optin for the salad instead of the fries. Order that sandwich with whole grain bread. Switch the potatoes for yams. Add some spinach to your pasta. Get creative with your fiber.

Have joy in eating and do it well. Dieting and calorie restriction is not effective and should be avoided. Eat for energy and invest in eating clean. Read food labels and educate yourself on healthy food options for every type of meal and snacks.

Happy Eating,

Holistic Therapy for Chiropractic and Yoga

Yoga and ChiropracticMyYogaOnline is happy to introduce Dr. Carla Cupido (Doctor of Chiropractic) as our latest contributing author and exercise science expert. Enjoy her first article "Yoga and Chiropractic":

"Balance is the medicine for a healthy life. Both yoga and chiropractic center many of their principles on the idea of balance. In yoga, balance exists among sthira (steadiness and alertness) and sukha (the ability to remain comfortable in a posture), pose and counterpose, and prana (the breath that enters the body) and apana (the breath that exits the body). In chiropractic, balance is considered in the assessment and treatment of flexible muscles and strong muscles, restricted ligaments and lax ligaments, and unrestricted joints and stable joints. If both yoga and chiropractic focus on the idea of balance in the body, how is it that there is such a divide between the practices of chiropractic and yoga?" Read More

Make Your Coffee a Green Coffee

Before you drink coffee and tea, keep these tips in mind:

1. Think Local Brew

Seek out the coffee and tea that have traveled the least distance to reach you and also aim at supporting local, independent farms, cafés, and roasters.

2. Mug shots
Find that perfect mug and make the investment. Not only is a reusable mug more pleasurable to sip out of than a paper cup, but it will replace an untold number of disposable cups, plastic sippy tops, “java jackets,” and other disposable paraphernalia. Make a quick tally of how many disposable coffee or tea cups you use in a month…yeah, it’s probably a lot...

Purpose and Focus Through Yoga

We live in an age of distractions and clutter that cloud the mind, create heaviness on the physical and burden the soul. In Yoga, these distractions and obstacles are called Chitta Viksepa. With even small adjustments in behavior, thought, and action, we can shift to a greater state of clarity and focus. This clearer sense of focus allows purposefulness to abound and abundance to flow.

Eco_Friendly Pets

1. Clean up after them

Cat owners should avoid clumping clay litter at all costs. Not only is clay strip-mined, but the clay sediment is also permeated with carcinogenic silica dust that can coat your cat’s lungs. In addition, the sodium bentonite that acts as the clumping agent can poison your cat through chronic ingestion through their fastidious need to groom. Because sodium bentonite acts like expanding cement—it’s also used as a grouting, sealing, and plugging material—it can swell up to15 to18 times their dry size and clog up your cat’s insides. Eco-friendly cat litters avoid these problems; a happy cat is a cat that doesn’t claw your face off. Scoop up your doggie doo in biodegradable bags.

Yoga Posture Stretch For Hamstrings

In Janu Sirsasana and many other Yoga Forward Bend Poses, we explore the expansion of the hamstring muscles. The resistance of the hamstrings against the sit bones (ischial tuberosities) limits the motion of the pelvis structure in relation to the thigh bone, thus reducing the amount of forward bending motion we can generate at the hip joint. By applying the principal of reciprocal inhibition in our Yoga practice, we can manipulate the neural signals of key muscle groups to more effectively relax the hamstrings and to increase our ability to fold into our Yoga Forward Bend poses.

Yoga And Meditation Practice

As we explore our Yoga Meditation practice, we can learn various techniques and applications to bring us to places of greater connection. A useful tool to create this greater connection in our Meditation sessions is Jiva Bandha. Jiva means "soul or the consciousness of the living being" and Bandha means "internal lock". Sustainable Seafood

An estimated 90% of all large, predatory fish are already gone from the world's oceans.

It is so important that we conserve what remains in the oceans, and harvest and consume seafood in a sustainable manner.

To help consumers and restaurants make more informed choices when selecting the seafood they consume or serve, the Vancouver, British Columbia Aquarium has developed programs to help identify sustainable seafood choices.

What does sustainable seafood mean?
